Cooking & Baking with Honey
Plenty of honey in your pantry? It lasts forever but why not use it in your cooking and baking? It’s one of the best alternatives to sugar and an awesome way to support local beekeepers!
Here are some of our best tips:
Use less. Honey is sweeter than sugar, so you don’t need to use as much. For 1 cup of sugar, use 2/3 to 3/4 cup of honey.
Reduce liquids. Honey is a liquid, so you won’t need as many other liquids in your recipe. As a rough guide, for every cup of honey used reduce other liquids by 1/4 cup. Alternatively, if there are no other liquids or changing their quantities will change your recipe too much then just add 2 Tbsp of flour for every cup of honey used in your baking.
Add baking soda. Honey can make baked goods more dense, adding some Baking Soda will ensure baking stays light and fluffy. In baking, add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of Baking Soda for every cup of honey.
Lower the temperature. Honey will caramelise so lower the temperature by around 50 degrees Celsius. This is just a rough guide and mostly applies to baking, keep a close eye on your cooking/ baking on your first attempt.
